One of my Debian installations is booted over both USB and SATA,
depending on which computer the disk Debian is stored on is plugged
into. The new /dev/disk/... path names in device.map and
grub-pc/install_devices are helpful since when the disk is plugged into
a SATA port upgrades work fine. The new pathnames do not cover the
use-case of a disk plugged into different transports. Probably the best
way to cover this is to allow installation to the parent of a particular
filesystem, identified by any path to a block device, such
as /dev/disk/by-label or /dev/disk/by-uuid. Same goes for device.map
even though I'm not entirely sure what it is used for.
