Is network-manager installed?
Is it correctly configured?
Is it online?

Does evolution --online work?

The Network Manager is not used here because
the network connection is set up via configuration
in /etc/network/interfaces
    hstreibe@hstreibel:~$ evolution --online
    evolution-shell-Message: Network disconnected. Forced offline.

Same here with version 3.4.4 from Debian Testing
Besides, it closes after 5 seconds
