After installing squeeze and setting it up with sudo (using blank root
password) the places menu doesn't allow access to remote filesystems. It
prompts for root password but doesn't accept user password or blank root
password.

reassign 592376 gnome-panel

It is highly unlikely that this is due to a problem in sudo. I gather
the 'places menu' is a gnome panel thing, so reassigning the bug there
for further attention.
