When running the Synaptic Package Manager more than once after a system boot
Synaptic fails to start with the following error message:

E: The package cache file is corrupted
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Update Manager (0.200.4-1) and aptitude (0.6.3-3) continue to work though.
update-notifier 0.99.3debi is also installed. Only after the system is rebooted
will Synaptic work again for one time. Simply starting Synaptic, then shutting
it down again is enough to trigger subsequent failures. Synaptic is run as
super-user from the Gnome desktop menu while logged into a regular account.

This problem appeared recently, after Synaptic was updated from 0.63 on August
23.

The problem with synaptic appears to have cleared up before the upgrade
from 0.70~pre1 to 0.70~pre1+b1. Previous to this there was a dpkg
upgrade from 1.15.7.2 to 1.15.8.4, though I am not sure if this predates
the clearing of the problem.
