The package of the new upstream release is ready, but it needed a
soname change of the Xaw3dxft library.  I am waiting for bupstreamer's
approval (approval of the patches) before trying to upload it to
Debian.

Seeing the xpaint page I see something important in the changelog:

	* Version 2.9.8.2 - nothing really new, just very small fixes

	* Very small changes in Xaw3dxft (minor Xaw3dXft.h API update)

I think that the changes needed are done.

I am sorry but no, Version 2.9.8.2 has changes in Xaw3dxft (minor
Xaw3dXft.h API update), but there is no "soname update"[0][1][2].

You can check this in the file Xaw3dxft/Imakefile. In this file the
variable SOXAWREV should be updated.

The variable right now is:
SOXAWREV = 6.1

it should be something like this:
SOXAWREV = 7.0

The upstream developer of xpaint is already aware of this, but he has
been very busy lately .

The README for the latest libxaw3dxft says:

This is an updated version of the libxaw3dxft library, as also used in the
latest xpaint package (version 2.9.8.4).

It includes autoconf scripts rather than the older Imakefile build script -
thanks to David Flater for providing these.

Well, it seems that now there is an independent source code for
libxaw3dxft, this new version of the library is using autoconf and has
a new soname version, but sadly the library included in the source
code of xpaint does not have this changes.

Maybe this is a good time to create an independent package of
libxaw3dxft.

I will ask upstream about this.
