Hm, interesting. Because pm-suspend (when using the binary nvidia driver) does
just that, run echo "mem" > /sys/power/state

Do you have a directory /sys/module/nvidia [1]?

Could you run
PM_DEBUG=true pm-suspend and send me the log file /var/log/pm-suspend.log please

The second attachment pm-suspend.log is the log file of a working suspend/resume due to the "backend" config file you suggested earlier (SLEEP_MODULE=uswsusp)

the first attachment is the log file of a failing resume (that is, a resume that does not automatically go back to X, requiring me to do Alt-F7).

What type of nvidia hardware do you use, which version of the driver?

Could you try and re-add add_parameters --quirk-no-chvt
to 98-video-quirk-db-handler and check if that helps.

Hardware is laptop Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS in a Dell Vostro 1320
My kernel is aptosid 2.6.36-0.slh.5
To do this, I guess you mean edit at around line 363 in case $1 in
suspend|hibernate.
Should I just code in  add_parameters --quirk-no-chvt at the end of the
case?

what I did:
remove my use of USWSUSP
changed

98-video-quirk-db-handler
to
add_parameters --quirk-no-chvt
as the last step, outside of any if statement, in the suspend section of that script

Thanks a lot Tim for your help in tracking this down. Very much appreciated!

Unfortunately we are at a situation here, where chvt breaks resume for the
binary nvidia driver (as in your case) yet in other cases it is needed (as the
git commit says).

It seems we need a better heuristic for binary nvidia, when to apply chvt and
when not. I will try to get more information on that.
