We're running redmine in a multi-user environment, where multiple web applications are deployed, so running it as "www-data" is not acceptable. The way we're doing this is by fixing the permission on the config.rb file: chown redmine /usr/share/redmine/config/environment.rb chown redmine /var/cache/redmine chgrp redmine /etc/redmine It works great, except for upgrades, where I need to tweak permissions every time. Is this something that could be considered for the package?
I agree it'd be best to run each webapp with a www-data-<webappname> user. I'll propose something if i have some time.
I am new to involvement with the Debian Redmine package. I see that the last response to this bug report is 13 years old. Is this still a desired feature?

I don't really use redmine anymore, so I can't speak to that issue or any other issue in the redmine debian package, I'm sorry.

Antoine, Thank you for your quick response. I am going to close this bug for now, but if someone else has this issue they should feel free to reopen it or to create a new bug report.
I guess more debconf integration would be very nice to have, but some foundations are there already.
Jakob, 1. What would need to be done to fully implement this? 2. Are you interested in doing the work to make it happen?
I haven't looked into it in detail yet, but from a cursory look: - Decide how instance users will be named (admin choice, _redmine-$INSTANCE, ...) - Decide how they will be created (systemd-sysusers? adduser?) - Enhance debconf templates/etc. - Consider possible upgrade paths (all www-data, manually configured instance owners, ...) Yes, but given time constraints most probably not before the trixie release. Cheers, sur5r
Control: reopen -1 Jakob Haufe <sur5r@debian.org> ACK. Completely understood. I am reopening this bug and assigning you as the owner (so that the original owner who no longer uses Redmine doens’t end up receiving unwanted emails).
