Hi,

there are some fonts installed on my system (and on other peoples' systems,
too, I guess) that are useless for normal writing, e.g. ttf-lyx or ttf-
opensymbol. These fonts do often merely contain mathematical or similar symbols
but no normal letters.

However, whenever I click on the font selector in OOo-writer or a similar
application, these fonts appear there among the other "normal" fonts as if I
would ever select them for writing. The truth is, whenever I want to include a
non-letter symbol in my text, I choose the "Insert -> Special character ..."
menu or paste the symbol from gucharmap, instead of learning which key is
mapped to which symbol in these fonts.

It would be nice if fontconfig provided a way to "tag" symbol-only fonts in
order to distinguish them from normal fonts that are actually applicable for
writing texts. Fonts tagged with this attribute could then be omitted from
lists thsat are presented to the user to choose from for writing texts. Of
course, this is definitely an upstream issue and applications would have to be
adapted, but I think this will be very convenient for users.

Best regards,
Fabian
