* Package name : icecat Version : 5.0.1 Upstream Author : Giuseppe Scrivano * URL : http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/ * License : MPL/GPL/LPPL Programming Lang: C/C++ Description : GNU version of the Firefox browser The goal of the IceCat project is to provide a completely free version of the popular Mozilla source code. It is (so far the only) part of Gnuzilla, the umbrella project analogous to Mozilla. The base Mozilla code is free but it supports and suggests using non-free plugins and other modules. GNU IceCat is completely free, and suggests only free plugins to users.
retitle 637348 RFP: icecat -- GNU version of the Firefox browser noowner 637348 tag 637348 - pending thanks Hi, This is an automatic email to change the status of icecat back from ITP (Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen any activity during the last 12 months. If you are still interested in adopting icecat, please send a mail to <control@bugs.debian.org> with: retitle 637348 ITP: icecat -- GNU version of the Firefox browser owner 637348 ! thanks However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on this ITP from time to time, by mailing <637348@bugs.debian.org>. Thank you for your interest in Debian,
I believe that it's very interesting to be supported in the future by Debian instead of having to install it from third party repository (Trisquel) or having to use raw Firefox/Chromium at open networks. IceCat is simply a cleaner Firefox: Unlike TorBrowser and like Firefox, Icecat works through normal net, but has clean default preferences (eg. no leaks with the use of Google resources) and better privacy settings by default and Fingerprinting countermeasures, SpyBlock. IceCat is generated from Firefox with the scripts available at http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git
Do I just vote by saying; "Yes, I would like IceCat to be packaged in Debian!" ? thanks. - KR To vote on IceCat for Debian email: 637348@bugs.debian.org Visit this link to follow 637348@bugs.debian.org posted emails: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=637348
I'm shocked no one packaged Icecat after all these years. Icecat is absolutely a package to have in Debian, and it's more in line with DFSG than Firefox is. This is the browser Debian should have used all these years instead of Iceweasel. Icecat's additional features over Firefox are all opt-in, so anyone who don't want them will have no problem, and there is no telemetry enabled by default. It's also worth noting that adopting Icecat as the default browser in Debian would avoid any conflict with Mozilla in the future (although they appear to be solved now, no one can predict what will happen in the future) and will join the efforts of the GNU team with the Debian team for a better free browser that will get more attention in all the Debian-based distributions.

I didn't said that but I agree with him, iceCat has been there for a while and it's a good alternative if you like firefox, you're concern about privacy and all that stuff and you don't know much about compiling source code or patching firefox (That's my case), please if you can... Make installing IceCat in debian a thing...
I found a recent repository that still builds the latest GNU Icecat release to a Debian package: https://github.com/losuler/icecat Maybe this could be a good start for adding GNU Icecat to the official Debian repositories?
Ping. And my +1. I'd say that Debian should have more priority for GNU Icecat than Firefox. If there's enough manpower and interest to support both, let it be. It one needs to be chosen, please kill Firefox already. Cheers, Alex
Hi all, I'm currently packaging Gnu Icecat for all major OSs (win, mac,GNU/Linux). I do offer it for download on codeberg and on a website. I recently packaged and got it approved (with surprise) by Microsoft for winget (sort of windows CLI package manager). Since I'm a Debian user and big fan of GNU/FSF, I wouldn't mind maintaining this package for Debian. I usually deliver Tier 1 (Deb, Intel Mac, win64) builds within hours from Firefox. On the next day the more exotic tier2 with aarch64_WIN and Apple silicon (requiring crosscompiling). I'm not sure how to proceed, should I wait for this ITP to expire? Thanks! Chip let
Not much to add, +1 from me. I'd love to have Icecat in Debian repos, since I think it's totally on par with Debian and Free Software philosophy. I can use GUIX manager to have Icecat, but it'd be nice to have an easier way to use Icecat on Debian. cheers, kujaw On Fri, 03 Nov 2023 11:05:59 +0100 chippy <chippy@classictetris.net> wrote: > Hi all, I'm currently packaging Gnu Icecat for all major OSs (win, > mac,GNU/Linux).
