I have many contacts in my contact list.  There is only one that when I click
on it all of gnome freezes.  Alt-tab will not allow me to switch to another
application; min,max, delete window buttons don't work; the system monitor
applets stop moving, the clock stops updating, ...  Ctl-Alt-F1 will get me
another session in which I can do a killall evolution to kill evolution and
then Ctl-Alt-F7 to get back to gnome.
It I run evolution in the debugger, I can't get to the debugger when everything
freezes.  Is there a way to delete the contact outside of evolution to fix it?

Yes, try to run the debugger from the console in Ctrl-Alt-F1.
