After recent upgrades to gnome 3 fallback session, metacity's windows switching mechanism using Alt+Tab has started reseting the X selection.

This prevents from selecting text in one window, then switch to another to paste (with middle mouse button).

It's quite annoying when you're used to middle mouse button pasting of selection.
