Hi,

I'm attaching a patch that would add the script 'backport-dsc' to the
devscripts package. backport-dsc helps backporting a source package by
adjusting maintainer, mangling version and applying
distribution/release-specific patches from in the source package. This
script is used to run semi-automated backporting for the NeuroDebian
repository, but may be useful for a larger audience, hence of potential
interest for devscript maintainers.

Thanks for you consideration,

Michael

Hi,

I'm attending the Debian Science Sprint at ESRF in Grenoble

http://wiki.debian.org/Sprints/2012/ScienceSprint

We talked about the need for mass-backporting for scientific software
deployment and this script was discussed. How is the chance of it being
accepted into the devscripts packages?

If the chance is zero for whatever reason, it was demanded that the
script is made available in some other package. Personally, I'd prefer
it to go into devscripts as it seems like a perfect match.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi,

I can confirm that the script Michael was presenting looks really
promising and I would consider it as a really helpful tool also for the
Debian Med team.

Kind regards

        Andreas.

Attached to this email for Russ' benefit.

Russ has a similar script[0]. There's definite overlap between the two.
I wonder if we can consolidate some of the functionality of these into a
common script and include that.

I like that backport-dsc simply prepares the source package and then
leaves the building up to the user's workflow.

I'm all for consolidation. Let's wait for Russ' thoughts.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi all,

triggered by the discussion in debian-project [1]: was there any
progress made here? Is Russ' software still actual?

Best regards

Ole

I still use it periodically (although rarely at the moment), but haven't
had any time to work on it and probably won't for the forseeable future.
Quite happy to have someone else pick it up if they have the inclination.

This bug is pretty old, but to close a mental loop: I no longer backport
anything regularly (work uses Ubuntu and mostly uses a very different
software deployment system, and I rarely need backports for my personal
systems), so my backport script should be considered essentially
unmaintained. If there's a good version out there that someone cares
about and is maintaining, I'll probably just switch to that the next time
I want to backport something and mark mine obsolete.

So please don't block incorporation of the backport script in this bug on
me evaluating it or merging it with mine; realistically, I'll not get to
that in the forseeable future. But very happy for anyone to take anything
they want from my script: ideas, code, whatever is useful.
