Sometimes the blinking text cursor disappears visually, although it's still technically there (text is still entered at the invisible cursor). I have found a way to bring it back: go to an empty workspace and then go back to the workspace with the document. The cursor never disappears while I'm looking at the document. It's usually that I have been at another workspace, and when I go back to the workspace with the document, the cursor has disappeared. I use Xmonad. Not sure if it could have something to do with it (it's the window manager that handles workspaces, after all). I have not used Metacity/Mutter/Shell much, so I cannot tell if it happens with those too. But I'll experiment as soon as I get time. Sadly it doesn't happen often enough so that I can just start a Shell-session and try for a few minutes. I would probably have to force myself to work in a Shell-session for a day or two, but that would be so inconvenient. ~ Patrik
This happens to me constantly (many times a day) when I'm switching workspaces in Awesome WM. So, what's the common factor in Xmonad and Awesome (and gedit)?
The same thing happens to me on occasion in gedit with DWM. I run gedit 3.4.2 on Debian 7.0 x64. I believe the common trait amongst the three window managers mentioned in this thread are that they are tiling, and I have seen other threads also talk about gedit acting oddly in this manner with tiling window managers.
The same thing (gedit's cursor disappears occasionally) happens at me too, and I'm using gedit 3.4.1 and i3 windows manager 4.4. So it indeed seems like it's an issue with tiling window managers.
Same issue here on Arch Linux with gedit 3.6.2 and awesome v3.5-rc2-5-g6a39fa4 (git build 2012/12/17). Anyone know if this affects other gtk/gtksourceview issues? Issue should probably be reported upstream.
probably be reported upstream. I'm having this blinking cursor issue in archlinux when using gnote with i3wm. Sometimes the cursor disappears. I think this is a gtk issue. This https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=623406 sounds similar
I have the same problem using Awesome WM. After switching to a different workspace (i.e. desktop), when I come back, the text cursor is invisible. Makes things really hard to use, in my case gedit and gnome-terminal. I am using a different window manager because of it, would really like to use Awesome again! Probably also applies to other programs than gedit and gnome-terminal. Seems like a GTK issue or something like that, rather than a gedit bug.
Hi, this is an old bug. Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer gedit version like 3.4.2-1 or 3.14.0-3 ? thanks regards althaser
