For a short time I had network-manager installed because Gnome3 in sid
could not be installed without it. I configured it, however, to not
manage any of my interfaces because I prefer to use ifupdown. This
caused Calibre some problems: it would display "No internet connection"
and refuse to download News for me. When I removed network-manager
(since Gnome3 is now configured to no longer require it) it resolved the
problem.

Please ensure that Calibre does not erroneously report "No internet
connection" when there actually is a connection available, just not via
network-manager.

Upstream seems pretty positive that network-manage needs to be
"disabled/uninstalled" so I am unclear as to why this is a problem when
network manager isn't fired up in the session...

I can also confirm that apt-get remove network-manager fixes the problem

It's a little unclear to me why this fixes the problem or why it is
there in the first place. However, since that's an easy fix, I am not
sure this is really a bug in calibre.

Of course this is a bug. Calibre is using the wrong test to determine
internet connectivity.

I had the same issue with calibre after installing network-manager.
The main network connctions are controlled by classical network scripts, but
i wanted to have a GUI for VPN and other things.

It took me a while to realize the problem was not a missing program :-(
Removing network-manager fixed it.

The author is obviously not willing to change the way of testing the connection,
so may it be possible to check configured connections in the pre-install script?
