   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)? to get speakup back i have had to force it to reboot a lot of words ran down the screen but don't no what it says cause speakup doesn't come back untel almost the end of the shutdown process
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Is there anything relevant in /var/log/messages?

How is Speakup configured - which synthesizer? Are you using
Speech-Dispatcher with Speakup, Espeakup, or a serial synthesizer?

I've had this all working fine with Espeakup, but I am not a regular Speakup
user.

Hi,

Another suggestion: try turning Speakup off before you start your X session.
In the laptop keyboard layout, it's caps lock-enter, and I can't remember what
it is in the desktop layout. Those who use Speakup will know.

So, turn off Speakup, start your X session and run Orca.
This may work around your problem.
