Dear Maintainer,

I am experiencing sudden graphical distortion in addition to text corruption as
described in the subject title. The problem often occurs spontaneously but is
more likely to occur when many programs are running concurrently, not
neccesarily graphically intensive ones. However the issue occurs most
frequently when restoring the system from hibernation / suspension to disk.

The graphical distortion appears as if small square sections of the display
(~1.5cmx1.5cm in physical size) have swapped places with each other, thus
distorting the output. The distortion can appear in one or more windows in once
instance but does not occur in menu/toolbar/title bar sections of windows.
Scrolling up and down, closing and reopening a file, switching between windows
etc usually fixes the display.

The font corruption takes the form of wrong characters and/or fonts appearing
in the place of the correct ones as well as possibly some distortion of the
actual characters themselves. When this occurs it generally happens throughout
the whole of X and can only be remeded by restarting the X server.

I have isolated the Intel X display driver as the causation by switching to the
Vesa display driver, under which the issues did not occur. I am using KDE but
have experienced at least the graphical distortion in Xfce and Gnome as well. I
am using screen resolution 1440x900 but again have experienced at least the
graphical distortion at 1920x1080.

Nothing obvious (errors, warnings, etc) is showing up in the Xorg log file or
the kernel log when the problems occur.

Using a combination of the following options in xorg.conf appears to decrease
the frequency of (but not eliminate) the distortions/corruptions:
Option      "Tiling"                            "False"
Option      "LinearFramebuffer"         "True"
Option      "Throttle"                          "False"
The preceeding options do not however appear to affect the frequency of
occurences when restoring from hibernation. Admittedly I am also employing much
trial and error guesswork with these options.

Is this reproducible with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.20.2?  With a 3.4
or 3.5 kernel?

Hi there,

I can confirm this bug. It wasn't appearing too often before, but it
seems like it's happening frustratingly more often ever since I upgraded
to 2.99.917 (running sid)

I can see no tangible error in syslog or xorg.log, maybe except for some
lines that don't seem to be too precise about the nature of the issue:
