Yesterday I tried to install Debian wheezy using my wireless network
(WPA-PSK). The installer was able to show me the list of networks so I
guess the firmware was loaded correctly from the USB stick that I
provided. I entered my password but after a long wait the only error
message I got is

"The exchange of keys and association with the access point
failed. Please check the WPA/WPA2 parameters you provided."

I retried installing with ethernet. After installation the the wireless
network worked just fine when I enabled it from gnome UI. What further
information should I provide? There's no wpa_cli or dbus-send so I don't
feel very comfortable at trying to blindly debug the issue when I don't
know about debian-installer architecture. Here's an overview of the
setup:

I guess seeing at least the syslog (/var/log/installer/) would be nice.
ISTR sensitive information is only stored under cdebconf/.

Firmware is supplied.

The interface is operative. Your screen displays a list of discovered
ESSIDs and the option to enter an ESSID manually. At least one ESSID in
the list would presumably be the ESSID you want to connect to. Here at
home I would be looking for "Horizon". May I suggest you repeat the
install up to this point and do the same. There is no need, of course,
to completely reinstall.

You have chosen the manual route. Maybe you left the entry blank. Maybe
you entered an ESSID. I can only guess because, for some reason, "null"
is shown for either. Why, I not know.

I repeated what you did this afternoon but gave the ESSID as "Horizon"
instead of choosing it from the list as I have been doing. The log has
similar lines to yours below.

Now you have a screen telling you there was a failure to exchange keys
and associate with the AP. I'd be inclined to think an attempt to
connect with Horizon in my case was a valid procedure. Unless the manual
method is intended for non-listed ESSIDs only.

After pressing "Continue" you once again have a list of ESSIDs plus a
manual method. This time you have chosen an ESSID from the list. I did
the same.
been disabled. Is this by design?

I've snipped the rest of your log because I'm not quite sure what you
did next. Aborted the attempted association and plugged in a Bluetooth
device, I think. And I assume you did not carry on much further with the
install.

I did carry on and once again got a message that key exchange and
association had failed. Continuing on, the next screen had the
information that the attempt to find available wireless networks had
failed and an ESSID for wlan0 to use could be entered. Doing this or
just pressing enter results in association with the AP and the log
shows:

Actually, without doing anything, the first line and the kernel lines
appear in syslog about forty seconds after the last screen comes up.
Configuring the wireless network came right in the end but the process
left me a little confused,

1. What is the purpose of a manual entry for an ESSID?

2. Why does choosing to give an ESSID manually lead to the interface
   being disabled?

3. Shouldn't selecting an ESSID from the listed ones always succeed?

My syslog is attached.

Yeah I tried both entering the ESSID manually and selecting it from the
list.

I just toggled the kill switch of the bluetooth just to make sure that
it was not also killing wifi. Since wifi worked after installation I am
sure that the kill switch did not disable it.

I can reproduce your experience when an ESSID is first provided manually
and then from the list. But if I install from scratch and choose the
ESSID from the list (no manual selection at all) I've always had it
succeed. This is with a variety of wireless adapters and machines. If
this is not happening for you people would be interested in the syslog
for that portion of the install.

I can reproduce this bug with this weekly build image:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-CD-1.iso (2013-02-25). When I try to connect to my encrypted wireless network (WPA-PSK), I get the error message: 'The exchange of keys and association with the access point failed. Please check the WPA/WPA2 parameters you provided'. After installation I can connect to the network without any problems.

I'll attach my syslog. When I realized that I can't connect to the
encrypted WLAN I just deactiveted encryption for the installation
process. After installation I reactivated encryption and had no problems
at all connecting to it.

I never tried to enter the ESSID manually but chose it from the list.

THX very much it helped. Iknow this post is a bit old but just wanted to
thank :-) so guys it works when u remove your encryption during the
installation and after that u can put it on back and configure it with no
issues. Have a good day.
