If I check can-change-accels in gconf-editor, I still can't reassign the
keybinding to delete files in nautilus. I use the following instructions:

Run gconf-editor, and open:
desktop -> interface
Enable “can-change-accels”.

Open nautilus, select any file/directory, then click “Edit” from menubar,
and hover on “Move to Trash” menuitem.
While hovering, click on your delete key. The accel should change from
“cntrl+del” to “del”.

Make sure you have selected a file, else the “Move to Trash” menuitem will
be greyed out.

Expected: The keybinding appears next to the menu item “Move to Trash” and
can be changed upon pressing a key.
Actual:  No keybinding appears next to the menu item “Move to Trash” and it
can't be changed.

I've got exactly the same issue on fedora with awesome desktop.

You have to hit the key twice if you want to assign Delete as the
accelerator.

The Delete key is used to clear the current key assignment, so the
first time you hit it, it clears the original key assignment, and then
the second time, it assigns the Delete key.

 There though is the possibility to change the key binding from ctrl-del
to del, if you open up dconf-editor, go to org -> gnome -> desktop ->
interface and hit the checkbox on "can-change-accels", then open the

for deleting the keybinding, once for assigning del as keybinding).

 This works for me flawlessly.  I know this isn't intuitive, but I fear
that the packagers in Debian won't divert from upstream behavior (not my
call), so this workaround might be your best option, at least for now.

Apologies for the "me too", I concur that this does not work under XFCE.

It may be specific to XFCE users who have subsequently installed gnome
manually, and are missing a package, or service provided by gnome?

Or users who may have installed --without-recommends (I often do this
for gnome/KDE packages, as they are otherwise exceedingly large downloads).

Alternatively, it could be a locale thing? I've tried with both LANG=C
and de_DE.UTF-8 locales.

If its really needed - I can post a video of it not working ;)
