In version 1.8-2 I use a "Autre" (french names) layout that allows me to write
œ and ’.
When I upgrade to version 2.5.1-2.1, "Autre" is changed to "Français
(variante)" which seems to allow to write these characters (as seen in the
image), but instead I get ô and æ.

I really would like not to pin the stable version on my testing distribution
(everything else is in testing).

In fact, it seems impossible to switch between layouts in gnome (classical version in testing).

The only way I found to have the main layout I use is to do (as root) :
dkpg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

and then restart computer.

But I can use only one layout this way.
None of the layout shown in gnome is the one used in the session.
And asking to switch layout has absolutely no effect (gnome keeps showing the default one).

I guess the content of /etc/default/keyboard is not related to the information given by :
setxkbmap -query


I don't know where I could report this bug, as I don't know which program deals with that in gnome.

What is for sure is that with the stable version of xkb-data, this bug does not exist.

After some reading, I found two other bugs that seem the same :

After some tests, here is what seems to come out (and gives me a workaround) :

* Having only the French (alternative) as selected layout in gnome does not work : only the keyboard set in /etc/default/keyboard is given (at least I think so)
* Having French (alternative) and another one like Russian for example makes the applet appearing, but unable to switch between them.
* I can have the applet able to switch between layouts (only) if I set the French layout (the basic one) in first position of my selected layouts.
