Dear Maintainer,
   * What led up to the situation?
Using GIMP daily and after a restart, it doesn't let me reduce the single-
window size (height only, the width is ok). An other problem is that the
maximize button is gone (I've checked on other application, it's only missing
on gimp)
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Almost nothing, I use GIMP daily for image edition and just recently upgraded
to the 2.8.4 version.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Like I said upper, it doesn't let me resize the height of the single-window
mode, it's annoying as the bottom of the screen is hidden and can't be
accessed.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Nothing else than it works normally, as it used to do.

Thanks for your help,
Regards.

It looks like you're using GNOME 3. Are you sure you haven't
left-anchored the window in GNOME, which might disable resizing &
maximizing? If you drag the window to the top of the screen, it should
still maximize that way.
Alternatively, the size of the docks might be preventing resizing the
window. You could try disabling them temporarily by hitting Tab or going
to Windows -> Hide Docks.

You wouldn't happen to have kept a broken copy of ~/.gimp-2.8/sessionrc
around, would you?

around, would you?
to Debian, but the version of gimp was the same at this time.
2.8.2 it was working correctly.

I think copying that directory should be fine. If you still have your old
sessionrc file around, could you send that, along with the new version that
doesn't exhibit the problem?

I don't have any trace of the old one, but here's the new one.

GIMP 2.8.6, single window mode greys out "Maximize" option on right click
of window bar, double clicking on title bar does nothing. Gnome 3 shortcut
to maximize does nothing... so on and so forth. I haven't touched
sessionrc (ever, didn't know it existed until I read this bug report).

Going to Windows and unchecking single window mode fixes the problem, but
isn't really what I want...

Issue still exists with Ubuntu 14.04 and latest gimp. When will this be
fixed?

Just got hit by this bug.

Fixed using Matt Moldvan workaround.

This was reported three years ago, is upstream aware of it?

This bug was tagged as fixed-upstream, but the upstream issue wasn't
actually fixed, it was merely moved to GitLab.

The old upstream issue: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679622
The new upstream issue (still open):
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/issues/535

GNOME/gimp#535 looks like the right bug for Bugzilla #724130 and Debian
#701903; fixing the metadata accordingly.

You mentioned Bugzilla #679622, but that looks like an unrelated bug
(which was also migrated to Gitlab, this time as GNOME/gimp#412).
