Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I tried to enable sharing files over bluetooth and could not
access the configuration GUI from the app list or the
button on the banner in the Public folder.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
This is a fresh install of Jessie. I did try the newer
package in unstable with no luck.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
    Could not configure sharing

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I am a novice but can follow directions. What else can I provide?

Following this guide:
https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-user-share/stable/gnome-user-share.html

The Personal File Sharing GUI does not exist:

Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/gnome-file-share-properties" (No
such file or directory)

I forced a downgrade to gnome-user-share from stable. It complained about
dependencies obviously and will not start, but the configuration GUI is
accessible.

I think I might be having this bug too.

Don't know how much info I can provide.

I'm running an amd64 Jessie destribution. Fresh installed in June (after
the release of Wheezy).

The command gnome-file-share-preferences (or something like that) doesn't
exist. In another machine running Wheezy it lunches from the applications
menu. By looking at the desktop file of the app I saw it points the above
command and when I try to run that in Jessie, it doesn't exist.

Or something has changed from the wheezy version up to now or this is a
serious bug, which is preventing file-sharing at all.

Don't know how much debugging info can I provide as there seems to be no
runtime error, but a missing executable!

Cheers

Dear Maintainer,

The above mentioned executable is indeed missing, it is not to be found in any
other package according to `apt-file` and it is messing with other packages
like `nautilus-share` (the ribbon with preferences in the Public folder is not
working (clickable without effect)).

Hello everybody reporting to Debian bug #721677.

I'd like to understand more about the problem you're seeing.

In Gnome 3.8, sharing is configured in gnome-control-center.
You all seem to be trying to do it somehow differently.
Why and how?

Could you please describe more details about what you're trying
to do that leads up to the problem?

Quoting parts from your previous reports:
[...]

There's no such executable for sure... the question is why/how you're
trying to use it though?!

Please describe more background.
Feel free to skip the (a) start computer, (b) log in, steps in your
description.

I followed a few debian/gnome wiki pages at first. Presumably they
were for gnome3, however they referenced (and showed screenshots) of
what I know to be `gnome-file-share-properties`, which until recently
was part of the package `gnome-user-share` and the package
`nautilus-share` still expects the executable to exist (it is called
by the button on the ribbon in the Public folder).

So, in steps:

- Install debian testing, use it for a week, get into the need to send
file by bluetooth to it.
- Gnome Help Page / Wiki on sharing tells me to install
`gnome-user-share`. For convenience I also installed `nautilus-share`.
- Gnome Help Page / Wiki tells me to go to settings->etc->etc, where a
shortcut to `gnome-file-share-properties` should be present.
- No such shortcut is present. Studying previous versions of the
`gnome-user-share` package shows that it contained the
`gnome-file-share-properties` executable before, but not anymore.

And IMPORTANT REMARK: my gnome-control-center has no mention of
sharing preferences whatsoever.

My expectations for `gnome-file-share-preferences` to be installed
might indeed be based on old information. However if there is some new
way to access these preferences, it is not mentioned on any wiki, it
is not part of gnome-control-center by default and it does not become
part of gnome-control-center after installing gnome-user-share.

All this on Debian testing. ArchLinux has gnome-file-share-preferences
in its gnome-user-share package as do older versions of Debian.

Thanks for the attention
Stefan

Ah, I should have seen that parts of gnome 3.8 are now reaching testing.
With parts, meaning functionality loss (because of the other parts not
yet there).

As I understand it, there's no actual program malfunction - just "simply"
no user inferface for configuration?!...

In that case, I'm sorry to say that this problem will likely not be
resolved until we manage to get all of the gnome 3.8 transitions done
and get gnome-control-center 3.8.x into unstable/testing.

For now I can only suggest installing it (and the rest of gnome 3.8) from
experimental if you urgently need the functionality back.

Sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

Thank you, I will do as you have suggested (use unstable for
gnome-control-center).

Hm... I just did `sudo apt-get install gnome-control-center/unstable`
logged out and then back in and the control center still has no
mention of sharing preferences.

I also get the following version:

% gnome-control-center --version
gnome-control-center 3.4.3.1

When it seem that at least 3.7.3 is necessary...

I guess I will try to install from experimental.

And in experimental I got:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gnome-control-center : Depends: libcolord-gtk1 (>= 0.1.24) but it is
not installable
                        Depends: libgnome-desktop-3-7 (>= 3.7.90) but
it is not going to be installed
                        Depends: libibus-1.0-5 (>= 1.5.1) but it is
not installable
                        Depends: libpwquality1 (>= 1.1.0) but it is
not installable
Depends: libwacom2 (>= 0.7) but 0.6-1 is to be installed
                        Depends: gnome-control-center-data (>=
1:3.8.3-2) but 1:3.4.3.1-5 is to be installed
                        Depends: gnome-settings-daemon (>= 3.7.91) but
3.4.2+git20121218.7c1322-6+b2 is to be installed

Should I try to report this to anybody or should I just wait for the
packages to trickle down to my current distribution.

Hello Stefan!

As you already noticed, you need to install from experimental.

You'll also need to update alot of the dependencies for gnome-control-center.
[...]

apt(itude) will not upgrade packages to experimental version unless
you explicitly tell it to. So you either need to specify all packages
(dependencies of g-c-c) as you want to install from experimental
or take a shortcut and temporary set experimental as the default and
preferred distribution with "-t experimental" (which might pull in a bit
more from experimental then really necessary, but probably not much).

The transitions are being dealt with and you don't need to report
bugs about it. Again, I'm sorry for the inconvenience of the current
half-upgraded state.

Thanks again, I have one, hopefully last, question.

The following command:
sudo aptitude -t experimental install gnome-control-center

asks to remove xorg and gnome-session and a few more
important-sounding packages. Won't this break the desktop environment?
Does it mean that I should just wait for all the transitions to be
dealt with?

The gui has changed substantially, however all the functionality is
now present (in 3.12 from Debian testing).

I guess this bug can be closed.

To be clear: not only has the gui changed, the control is provided by
different deb packages and executables.
