running agedu -s /var consistently causes the crash with this error:
running agedu -s /etc does not produce this error.

Both our /var and /etc are xfs filesystems.

Hi, just to let you know that I built this from source on the same
system and got the same error, so perhaps the problem lies upstream.
I used agedu-r9723 from
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/agedu/
The problem is when using the lower-case -s  option.
