Occasionally, while entering text for an insert-like command, "^@" will
appear on the screen immediately following the insertion point, as if
there were a NUL character there in the file.  It remains there during
text entry, the "^@" moving along as more text is entered before it.
It disappears at the end of text entry (following Esc).  There's no
permanent effect on the file content.
