After upgrading from Squeeze to Wheezy, local Gnome sessions work are normal as well as command-line logins for LDAP users. Logging into a Gnome session is impossible for an LDAP user as the session start hangs. Using WDM and starting gnome-session from a terminal window reveals numerous error messages, the first of which relating to a problem creating a control file at $HOME/.cache. As the home directory is an SMB share (which I cannot change) such file types are not supported ("permission denied"). WDM itself works.

Dear Maintainer,

I have tried most window managers available in Wheezy and only FVWM2 and LWM work.

Most other tested window managers display a (usually white) background without any
toolbars or background pictures. <Alt><F1> or mouse clicks do not work so that the session
has to be ended by shutting down WDM.

FVWM2 and LWM work quickly and are stable.
