The Fira font family comes in a Sans Serif with 4 weights (light,
regular, medium and bold) all accompanied by italic styles. The package
also includes a Mono Spaced variant with 2 weights (regular and bold).

Hello,
I've created a package for fonts-fira. I tried to contact the pkg-fonts-devel
mailinglist. But it seems my message was spam filtered.

The package is here https://github.com/ruediger/fonts-fira at the moment and
can be build via "debuild -us -uc -A". I wish to move it upstream into the
Debian Fonts project if there is interest. I however don't know what other
steps are required to do that.

Regards,
Rüdiger

I discovered that:

Mozilla are not distributing the source for these fonts. The source is
available though, see these sites:

http://www.donotlick.com/2014/05/23/try-out-fira-sans-a-free-open-source-typeface-commissioned-by-mozilla/
http://dev.carrois.com/fira-3-1/

The source can only be converted to a TrueType font using a
proprietary program that only runs on Macs. This means that Fira is
not suitable for Debian main and must be uploaded to Debian contrib
instead.

Does this even matter for Fonts? You can still simply open the font file in
Fontforge (a free software font editor) and change it like any other font.
It's not like a program binary where editing the binary is much more
complicated than editing the source.

I mean if they hadn't published the "source" (their editor files) at all then
would it still have ended in contrib?

Rüdiger

Editing executable code isn't that hard any more either with tools
like IDA but we still require source code for them.

It depends on how responsible the people packaging it are and how many
questions the ftp-masters raised when looking at the initial package.

It seems that at the moment Mozilla won't accept modifications. But if they
do maybe we can convince them to standardise on UFO instead of a proprietary
editor format. UFO should be supported by FontForge.

Rüdiger

They have now added the UFO files to the github repo. I haven't updated the
package yet. But it should now be good enough for Debian main, right?

It sounds like the author is still using the Glyphs app but saving and
loading UFO instead of the Glyphs format. That seems acceptable.

However, we are missing a way to build the fonts from the UFO sources.

Hi,

it’s been two years… Is still someone trying to get this into Debian?

(I’ll use https://github.com/eddelbuettel/pkg-fonts-fira for now.)

Thanks,
Joachim

I also want to use fira in debian, but nobody seems to be interested in
packaging it. :/

Once fnt is accepted from NEW QUEUE *

you could also just run
fnt install pompiere
fnt install recursive
fnt install firamono
fnt install firasans
fnt install firasanscondensed
fnt install firasansextracondensed

Hi,
I downloaded the latest Fira release and ran ufo2otf on
sources/ufo/Fira*.ufo. That spewed a lot of warnings but seems to work
(I can view the font in GNOME font viewer).
I think packaging is now as easy as:
- Getting a +dfsg'd tarball (only including the sources)
- running ufo2otf on the sources

best,

werdahias
