If you make changes so that you end up with broken packages, synaptic is
not be able to download changelogs (Failed to download the list of
changes. Please check your Internet connection.). When you fix the
broken packages, you still can't download the changelogs. In addition,
when you have fixed the broken packages, when you try to apply the
changes, the change summary gives a warning about non-authenticated
packages, but the list of packages under NOT AUTHENTICATED is full of
blank entries. If you try to go through, the program throws up the error
"E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.
E: Unable to correct dependencies
E: Unable to lock the download directory"
Running this again (with the exact same marked changes as before) is
successful.
There is a workaround I have discovered - if run Mark All Upgrades and
cancel after fixing the broken packages (but before applying), applying
them will work properly.
