Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
* What led up to the situation?
It's a fresh install (Wheezy and Jessie). There was no changes on the
system, and the fan works on high speed, with a normal temperature (39 ~ 41 C)
on both cores.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
I've tried to reinstall Wheezy several times, upgraded its kernel to
3.9, 3.10 and 3.11.6 versions with no effect.
I've tried to install Debian Testing (Jessie), that was ineffective
too.
Killed a lot of applications - no effect.
Stopped GDM and worked on shell only - no effect.
Updated BIOS - no effect.
* What was the outcome of this action?
No changes. The fan is still working on high speed with no need to.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
The fan working normal.
My setup:
Dell Vostro 3560
Intel i5-3230M 2.60 Ghz (Turbo Boost 3.20 Ghz)
3rd generation Intel HD Graphics 4000
At my system it helped to install "acpitool", and to restart "i8kmon" via "service i8kmon restart" (which constanly crashes after some seconds in absence of acpitool) Looking at the dependecies of i8kutils it states "acpi | acpitool" perhaps the "or" isn't sufficient any more Regards, Michael
Hello. Felipe <unknowuser01@gmail.com>, one possible solution to your problem is install the package 'i8kutils'. This is for controling/monitoring fan/temperature in Dell notebooks. Michael Kasch <michael.kasch@gmail.com>, this bug is possibly already fixed in the revision below. http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~vitorafsr/i8kutils/trunk/revision/19 If this revision solves the problem, in the next release the package will be ok. But just in case it doesn't, could you please post here the log of the crash you were having without 'acpitool' instaled. And also the version of 'i8kutils'. Regards. Vitor Augusto
I'm no longer using Debian on this notebook, as the result of this bug is quick battery discharging (and a lot of noise). I'm planning on installing it again, but next week. Can I test it on debian live?
Yes, you can test on debian live. Doing the right configurations, this package functions well on Dell laptops.
Hello,
I updated my Debian Testing last week (previous update was 1-2 months
ago) and I also noticed a regression.
The fan keeps starting and stopping every 5 seconds.
My computer: Dell E6410 with integrated intel graphic (i915)
My system: Debian Testing with kernel 3.11-2-686-pae
Package version: i8kutils 1.40
Some output:

Downgrading to i8kutils 1.33 fix the problem:

Regards,
Hello, I'm back on Debian with this setup: Debian Wheezy Kernel 3.12-0.bpo.1-amd64 i8kutils 3.13 The fan is still working on full speed. Is there any solution for this?
Sorry for the wrong i8kutils version. It is 1.33.
Hello I still could not solve the problem. I am using Windows 8.1 and I really need to fix this issue in order to come back to Debian. Is there any news regarding the solution of the problem?
Problem solved by updating the BIOS to a newer (more recent) version. There's no need to install i8kutils, as the fan seems to be working normal. Dell Vostro 3560 OS: Debian Jessie (testing) Solution: updated BIOS from A15 to A17 (A16 was the one responsible for fixing thermal functions). Thanks for all the help!
