the current experimental version does not declare a dependency on
appropriate icons, but fails to start up when the icons are missing.
(or, if your default view is not the calendar, it crashes when the
calendar view is selected). from a starting a session:

the problem can be worked around by

# ln -s ../icons/gnome/16x16/status/gtk-missing-image.png /usr/share/pixmaps

for the moment, but evolution should rather depend on a package that
provides icons to start.

the issue showed up when running from a completely empty home directory.

(this might be a more general gnome packaging thing, eg. epiphany often
has missing icons in experimental version, but it doesn't make it
crash.)
