1) Configuration
I did not figure out how to setup a strongswan connection within the
Gnome3 Network Manager toolkit in the top right corner. I worked around
this by using the classic "nm-connection-editor".

2) Startup
The connections initialization fails right away. However, when doing
sudo /usr/lib/ipsec/charon-nm
first in a terminal, everything works fine.

I think the network-manager part of the stack (in
network-manager-strongswan package) is not working correctly, but it
doesn't look really maintained these days.

Have you tried the new version 1.3.1 of n-m-s?
