... at the top of the screen for a few seconds. Then the X server exits.
No EE message appears in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

The machine is a Compaq Armada E500.

Various comments suggest that disabling KMS might help
and the specs list the screen resolution as 1024x768.

~$ grep nomode /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset video=1024x768"
~$ update-grub

Also upgraded to jessie and now have 3.14 and 3.2.0 kernels available.

No improvement.  With each kernel, X still gives nothing more that
a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor.

Reinstalling squeeze is an expedient solution here?

Yes indeed.  Upgrading from Wheezy to Squeeze yields a
working system.  No special adjust to grub or to X is
needed.
