Description : “Source Han Sans CN” A sans-serif Pan-CJK font family
(CN subset) that is offered in seven weights

Source Han Sans is a sans serif Pan-CJK font family that is offered in seven
weights—ExtraLight, Light, Normal, Regular, Medium, Bold, and Heavy—and in
several OpenType/CFF-based deployment configurations to accommodate various
system requirements or limitations. As the name suggests, Pan-CJK fonts are
intended to support the characters necessary to render or display text in
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Due to the need for Adobe's ADFKO, this will have to go to contrib.
IIRC ADFKO will become open source at some point and the font could
move to main then.

Hi

Why? There are many fonts around in otf format and packaged for
Debian. I don't see that problem here.

Is the ADFKO needed for building? We never *build* a otf font but
ship it.

Addition - these fonts are distributed in OTF format. So no building.
Are you talking about embedded code snippets like for the hinting code?

AFAICT, fontforge has enough capability to convert the format of the
files in the git repo into OTF files, at least. Pehaps also combining
those into the OTC files.

The outlines are in the repo as type0 (collection of type1) format, but
again fontforge can edit and save that format just as well as its own
sfd format, so onecan argue that it is close enough to preferred src
format.

So it seems they are already dfsg-free, even without a dfsg-free release
of adfko, yes?

Or did I miss something which fontforge and/or fonttools cannot yet
accomplish?

I would be happy to be proven wrong on this; feel free to package it
for main if fontforge can take the place of all the commands mentioned
in the upstream build system. The way to prove that would be to only
ship the non-OTF files in the source package and build the OTF files
at build time using fontforge. Adobe might be unhappy at us for
finding out we are using a non-standard build though, so it might be a
good idea to ping them about AFDKO becoming FLOSS and let them know we
will use fontforge until that happens. Might be a good idea to send
them a Makefile that uses fontforge too.

FYI, I just contacted Ken about this. Apparently Read Roberts is in
the final stages of preparing to open-source AFDKO. Also Ken suggests
not using FontForge because in his experience, it often produces
malformed fonts.

The below is the fontforge script that I tried to make font from, but
not tested throughly.

Open("./source-han-sans/Regular/cidfont.ps.CN")
CIDFlattenByCMap("./source-han-sans/UniSourceHanSansCN-UTF32-H")
Reencode("ISO10646-1", 1)
Generate("sourcehansans-cn-regular.otf")

Also, it does not reference to "features.CN", which includes baseline
information. Parsing that and appending the information into the font
is simple using python script, but fontforge python binding does not
provide API for force encoding.

Have a look at #754926 (fonts-noto).

Adobe Source Han Sans fonts are actually the same with Google's Noto
Sans CJK ones. Just different names.

Personally I prefer Noto as the name. Noto sounds more distinctive than
Source to me.

Hi all,

Adobe ADFKO has been released under a free software license (Apache 2.0):

http://blog.typekit.com/2014/09/19/new-from-adobe-type-open-sourced-font-development-tools/

So the fonts that build using them (RFPs and ITPs CCed) can now go to
Debian main once
Adobe ADFKO has been packaged and accepted into Debian main.

Anyone want to package it?

Hi,

A long time ago, you expressed interest in packaging fonts-adobe-sourcehansans. Unfortunately,
it seems that it did not happen. In Debian, we try not to keep ITP bugs open
for a too long time, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to
refrain from packaging the software.

This is an automatic email to change the status of fonts-adobe-sourcehansans from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 12 months.

If you are still interested in packaging fonts-adobe-sourcehansans, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

It is also a good idea to document your progress on this ITP from time to
time, by mailing <755382@bugs.debian.org>. If you need guidance on how to
package this software, please reply to this email, and/or contact the
debian-mentors@lists.debian.org mailing list.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,
