It seems zathura does not open compressed files:

$ zathura maximabook-19-Sept-2004.pdf.gz
error: unknown file type

^C
$

As counter examples, the following programs can open compressed PDF files:

- xpdf
- mupdf
- evince
- gv

It would be very nice if zathura could handle compression
transparently, because then I would have to call other PDF readers
less often. :-)

Still occurs. This is annoying because Debian distributes
compressed PDF files, e.g.
  /usr/share/doc/fontconfig/fontconfig-user.pdf.gz

Syntax Warning: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)
Syntax Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Syntax Error: Couldn't find trailer dictionary
Syntax Error: Couldn't read xref table

However, Debian's xpdf wrapper can. So this works from a shell.

Similarly, Debian could also provide a wrapper for zathura.
