Claws-mail doesn't seem to be able to send E-Mails to IDNs.
For example sending a mail to "echo@köthe.de" throws the following error:

[22:03:45] SMTP> RCPT TO:<echo@köthe.de>
[22:03:45] SMTP< 501 <echo@köthe.de>: malformed address: öthe.de> may not follow <echo@k
** Fehler bei der SMTP-Sitzung
*** Fehler beim Senden der Nachricht:
501 <echo@köthe.de>: malformed address: öthe.de> may not follow <echo@k

Indeed, that's not supported yet, forwarding to the upstream bug.
