[ issues with reportbug #758619 prevented me from using it completely
to send this report so I generated using reportbug --template ]

Since upgrading from 2.:1.16.0.901-1 to the above version I have been
unable to use a second screen attached to my laptop. During this
update, I also went from linux-image-amd64 (3.14+59) to 3.16+61 – not
sure if its relevant.

I have Debian Jessie on a Thinkpad T440s.

I normally boot with the second monitor attached and it boots fine
into gdm. Since the update, booting with the monitor attached blanks
the laptop screen (primary screen) as X starts. The second screen
works fine as a second screen – as in the primary display is off but
it behaves as if it is there. The only way out here is to ctrl-alt-f1
to a terminal and reboot.

Booting with the second screen unplugged works fine for the primary
laptop screen. Attaching the second screen when logged into gnome
causes the primary laptop screen to blank again. From here if I
ctrl-alt-f1 and then ctrl-alt-f7 back into X I sometimes get them both
working as expected. Sometimes this too doesn't work and I have to
reboot again.

This worked fine until the update noted above. I have fiddled with
various display options to no avail.

The segmentation fault at the address shown in Xorg.0.log happens consistently.

Please let me know if there is any further info I can provide.

Actually this seems more likely to be a kernel issue than an X one.
Is the screen actually dead, or does it "just" reset the brightness to
minimum?  I.e. do the brightness keys or poking
/sys/class/backlight/*/brightness work?

thanks for the prompt reply. you were quite right with the brightness
suggestion - it was down to zero on the laptop screen when gdm loads.
i didn't think to try that...

after increasing the brightness and logging in, it went back to zero
as my gnome session started and i needed to bump the brightness up
again. so something is definitely wrong here - not sure its xorg
anymore - maybe gdm ??

that seg fault in the xorg log not significant?

i will try and fiddle with the gdm init as a work-around and see if i
can get it to flick the brightness up on the gdm login screen and
post-login as the gnome session starts.

again, this has been recent since the xorg update - previously all was
well. the complete apt update performed just before all this began is
below for reference.

this bug is present in jessie,
could just be also related to the package gdm3?

my use case: intel video, laptop, attaching a second screen
drivers: i915 an nouveau

When booting a second screen attached the laptop screen has a completely dimmed out login screen,
the attache screen shows only a grey color (background login screen, not the login itself);
* when using the fn+brighter keys nothing changes
* when unplugging the second screen, the laptop login screen comes up with a this remark, according to the settings
 in the upper right corner the brightness of the screen is zero.., while at that point in reality it is not!

Recap with dual screen again:
* let's say u login "blindly", then again the main laptop screen is dimmed out,
with the only difference as before; now u can use the fn+brightness keys from the laptop to increase the brightness

Tested and didn't work:
There was suggestion to look at the
	/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight
dir
i tried
	$chmod -w brightness
	and / or
	$chmod +t intel_backlight/
non of these options prevented the brightness file from being overwritten at boot, with the same annoying behaviour again.

Remarks and notes:
	$modinfo i915 shows there is invert brightness setting?
		"invert_brightness:Invert backlight brightness (-1 force normal, 0 machine defaults, 1 force inversion), please report PCI device ID, subsystem vendor and subsystem device ID to dri-devel@lists.freedesktop.org, if your machine needs it. It will then be included in an upcoming module version. (int)"

hi

the updates listed at end were applied on 17 May 2015. the issue noted
here is no longer happening and the gdm screen brightness is fine and
i am able to 'visually' log in.

i'll add anything further if there is a change for the worse.
