   * What led up to the situation?

I don't know who's at fault, whether it's my application vlc, whether
it's mate-power-preferences or mate-screensaver-preferences. While
watching a movie (use vlc) for some reason the software thinks that
the system is idle and goes into screensaver/power-saving mode. This I
hadn't had while using Gnome.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I have no idea what to do/help debug the situation.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I have two scenarios where I want the mate-power-preferences and
mate-screensaver-preferences should not work and work. When I'm
watching a movie, then neither of them should interfere, whereas if
vlc is not playing and the system deems it likely that the system is
idle, the screensaver and power-preferences go into effect.

I would like to know if it's possible.

Raising the severity. The issue has been happening for about 2 months
now and I don't know whether it's vlc responsible or
mate-power-preferences or mate-screensaver-preferences. Somehow the
two or three of them are not playing along well. Need more info. to
diagnoze the same.

I don't think this is reasonable. You're not running into any serious
issues, it's just a minor annoyance and should not be something we
should be worrying about for Jessie. You can just disable your
screensaver for the time being when watching a video or just move
the mouse for a second, not really a big deal.

I understand that users are looking for the perfect, bug-free desktop
experience. But please understand that not all issues are important
enough that they should immediately be worked on. Especially with
over 300 actual RC bugs looming over the Jessie release and our
time and resources as maintainers and developers being limited.

the MATE desktop has an applet for the exact use case that you describe.

MATE power manager ships an applet called the mate-inhibit-applet [1].

Please add that applet to your MATE panel and use it prior to starting
the video file.

Now your screen will not blacken anymore.

The inhibit power-manager doesn't work. My screen blackens after 30 minutes.
I hope this is told/known upstream.

Thank you for updating the bug-report with your latest findings. There are a
couple of things at issue here and they have been discussed and reported
upstream.(This was done at the same time the bug was originally reported).

The inhibit applet does not operate the 'display sleep' portion of
the mate-power-manager code due to an issue with mate-settings-daemon.

Upstream is aware of the issue and upstream is actively seeking resolution.
Those fixes will not make jessie (it is frozen).

In the meantime there is a work-around that is easily done by "disabling the
screen-saver(s)" and setting the mate-power-manager "Display" setting to
'Never'... of course changing them back when the movie/or other task  is
completed.
