   * What led up to the situation?
Installed debian KDE desktop without root password ie. uses sudo.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Installed synaptic tried to start from menu
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Synaptic would not authenicate.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Program to authenicate and start.

Solution:Removed /usr/share/applications/synaptic-kde.desktop
Modified /usr/share/applications/synaptic.desktop by removing line 171 "NotShowIn=KDE;"

IMPORTANT NOTE: I tested this solution in systems installed using sudo and using a root password. Synaptic would authenicate using the modified /usr/share/application/synaptic.desktop in both installations. It appears that the synaptic-kde.desktop is no longer needed in either installation method if the modifed synaptic.desktop menu item is used.
