When I toggle xmms2 playback on after pausing it for a while I only get
noise. This mostly happen after long pauses (>20 minutes). However, I
saw this same behaviour happening after pausing for short periods (~10
seconds), but it is rare.

ALSA output plugin. After your question, I killed the running instance
of xmms2d and started a new one using "pulse" plugin. It seems that it
solved the issue. Is it an error to use ALSA plugin while a pulseaudio
server is running?

I suspect buggy ALSA drivers in combination with how we use the API, and
putting pulse inbetween interacts differently with the driver. It's
generally better to use pulse anyway since it has power aware buffering and
mixing.
