Please consider using a more usual naming scheme, and please consider
maintaining it within the Debian PHP PEAR (and Composer) Maintainers
team.

The upcoming php-apigen (version 4) will need at least the version 1.4
of this package as a dependency, I’d be happy to prepare a team upload
here (if you maintain a VCS for the packaging, a pointer would be
appreciated).

Looking closer at libmarkdown-php, it seems to actually track the
“classic version” of PHP Markdown [1], so I’ll take care instead of
packaging php-markdown (i.e., the library) in its own package.

I still believe libmarkdown-php is not an accurate package name for a
PHP package, and let this bug open. I’ll base the php-markdown package
on this one, I guess both descriptions may deserve to be polished in
order to offer our users something to help them distinguish the two
packages, their goals, and their targeted audiences.

Maintainers team if you wish to discuss this further.

one question. Is there any way to let users follow this package
rename? From the archive side, libmarkdown-php will still exist. Maybe
put the replaces field to php-markdown-classic, the recommends field
to libmarkdown-php, making it an empty transitional package or
anything like that?

 Sure, I've some questions by now. As php-markdown-classic is a new
package, should not it start with a new d/changelog? Maybe use some
alternative versioning (for which I don't have any idea)? Due to
1.0.2-1 changes already exist and for php-markdown-classic it is a
lower version than the previous few ones.

which has some packaging history and I see no point in hiding this
history.

I think we should definitely use 1.0.2 as upstream version.  I simply
used -1 as Debian revision since this would have saved us from
specifying the -sa parameter when building.  I'm absolutely fine with
1.0.2-4 as version number and using -sa to make sure the orig.tar.gz
will be included into the upload.  My bet is that the DFSG team will be
sensible enough to cope with both.  Finally I consider this as a matter
of taste from the maintainer and we have not much example cases where
this is demonstrated.  I also think its not a matter where users will
stumble upon.
