I would like to have an option for autoupdate that doesn't modify configure.ac but instead reports the needed changes to stdout. This is needed to non-destructively report that configure.ac needs updating. In addition it should use a temporary directory for autom4te.cache/ so that the existing one if any doesn't get modified. The following feature request was reported against the Debian packaging for Autoconf as bug #776559.
