I found out on wikipedia that the inconsolata font has been forked on
Google Foot Directory. It has been fully hinted and a bold variant
created.

That would probably close https://bugs.debian.org/618568 which state the
bold font is too wide in konsole.  I only have Medium and Oblique
myself but that is an other story.

Hhhmm, this doesn't include the FontForge source so uploading it would
probably be a DFSG violation.

It would also be great if the Google folks could forward their changes
upstream instead of forking it.

VFB format is from the proprietary FontLab tool. Is there a tool in
Debian main to build the TTF/OTF files from that? If not we would have
to move fonts-inconsolata to contrib.

Hello Paul,

The fonts-inconsolata source package already has some references to
FontForge, at least there is a /fontforge-sfds/ directory with an
Inconsolata.sfd file.

Might be worth another bug to migrate the package to contrib per DFSG if
it violates it.

That is a similar issue to the FontForge sources above. Other fonts
package probably ships .VFB. If they are in contrib, I guess Inconsolata
should be moved there as well.

Hmm, so Raph has abandoned it. A shame :(

Inconsolata only needs to move to contrib if we use the Google version,
as far as we can tell Raph's version comes with full sources that can be
rebuilt using only DFSG-free tools from Debian main. Google's doesn't.

An alternative might be to keep Raph's version, patch the source to fix
the issue reported and build the font from source. Unfortunately we need
Raph to provide us with the build process he used first.

Christoph Haag created a new fork of Inconsolata (and a bunch of other fonts)
[1] that keeps the fonts in a fontforge compatible format, and also maintains
a web interface [2] that exports the binary formats of the fonts.

The sources seems to have been converted from the vbf files in a scriptable
fashion. (*1)
Also Christoph's git repository documents the conversion procedure and
provides a the requested regular and bold fonts.

Christoph, what was the exact procedure needed to convert obtain the sfdir
format from the inconsolata font? Is there any data lost in the process?

truetype formats, which were the ones most up-to-date
(http://git.io/vWePO). Exact procedure: opening with fontforge save as
sfdir. When preparing files for fontain.org I prefer sfd/sfdir, ufo,
otf, ttf in this this order. The vbf sources often available are
exclusive to FontLab, as far as I know.

IMPORTANT: main incentive for fontain.org is the possibility to export
fonts to necessary formats, e.g. for use with LaTeX, in a easy way and
create a interface to browse converted fonts. Collecting the sources is
a side effect and I try my best to have the versions in the repository
up-to-date (already not true for Inconsolata). Therefore the sources
should not be considered a 'fork' but a 'mirror'.

repurpose this one to track the issue of building from source.

It seems Google has multiple "sources" and what we in Debian consider
source seems hosted at https://github.com/googlefonts/inconsolata

So consider this a (strong) request to a) update to track new upstream
source location, and b) repackage to properly build from true source.
