Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
I tried out to install two new programs, one that is listed, one that is not.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
In both cases the wizard for installing opened. In the case of the not-listed
program I chose 32 bit installation. When I chose 64bit the process continued,
but led to another bug (not described here). In the case of the listed program
(tax software ElsterFormular) PlayOnLinux downloaded Wine 1.6 again (although
the very same version is already installed from the official resources).
* What was the outcome of this action?
In the end I got this error message: "Error in POL_Wine // Wine scheint
abgestürzt zu sein // Wenn Ihr Programm weiter läuft, ignorieren Sie diese
Nachricht" (english: Wine seems to have crashed. If your program continues,
ignore this message.) The message is displayed repeatedly after every step of
the installation process. In the end the program is not installed. When I am
told only to click on continue after the installation is finished I wait for
hours, but nothing happens. Clicking on "continue" means the program is not
installed.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
That everything works fine. ;)
I discovered that Wine was missing i386-support. After installing wine32 the problems vanished (others appeared). So why does POL display such a vague message? This needs to be changed.
PlayOnLinux seems to require that the system wine be 32-bit, even though PlayOnLinux is later able to install and manage various 32-bit and 64-bit versions of wine in the PlayOnLinux sandbox. Wine package naming changed in Jessie, so at least on amd64, PlayOnLinux should now explicitly depend on wine32:i386. Depending on wine is not sufficient, because the wine package is simply a meta-package that allows either wine32 or wine64 to be installed, and PlayOnLinux breaks when using 64-bit system wine. I do not know whether or not there are packaging policies regarding this sort of dependency, where PlayOnLinux works fine on the amd64 architecture, but depends on a package from the i386 architecture. In any case, I would not want to see PlayOnLinux removed from the amd64 architecture, as the issue can be worked around by manually adding the i386 architecture and installing wine32. Changes:
playonlinux (4.2.8-1) unstable; urgency=medium
.
* New upstream release.
* Update debian/copyright to match the new tree.
* Depend on wine32|wine32-development to make sure the 32 bits version
of wine is installed. POL assumes it is (Closes: #783875).
* Build-depend on dh-python as it is used in the build process.

I don't believe that the fix here closes this bug... Daniel Kauffman wrote "PlayOnLinux should now explicitly depend on wine32:i386" but instead it depends just on wine32, i.e. without the arch specification. This means that this package fails to meet the dependencies and so cannot enter testing... Thanks, Jack

I just thought I would have a try, having never done any kind of packaging before, when I noticed failed previous attempts in the logs, with links to https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2015/08/msg00269.html in the previous commit messages and the followup which makes it look quite tricky... Do you know if anything has changed since then? Any new information etcetera? If not, perhaps we go about this the wrong way, instead of bringing a 32-bit arch to the user, we should bring the user to the 32-bit arch... i.e. at the end of the install we can detect if wine32 or wine32-development has been installed, and if not, notify the user that they should install it... does that sound possible? Also I now see that the perl-transition has removed playonlinux from testing... did that occur because of this bug? I.e. because we have a newer (broken control file) version in sid? Or because of the transition itself? If the former we should definitely just remove this dependency to allow playonlinux before continuing our tests to get it to install. Best, Jack

I guess you sent the message to the wrong bugreport. Maybe #799200, as seen in your pictures, was intended.

Would it be acceptable to show a debconf dialog/warning to the user? For example ``` playonlinux requires a 32-bit installation of wine Please make sure multi-arch is enabled: dpkg --add-architecture i386 && apt update And install the wine:i386 package: apt install wine:i386 ``` I spent some time debugging this before finding the bug report. To make matters worse the playonlinux message is very vague. I think reminding users to manually install a dependency would help many. Thanks
Dear Maintainers, I get the same problem but I'm trying to install Dashlane (a password manager), a non-listed program (at least I selected non-listed). The program does run after installation but I do still get that error message. After I click 'OK' on the error message, it goes to another dialog which shows 'loading' and seems never to end (it just stays there). See screenshots for info. I can confirm that Dashlane is actually installed (on the playonlinux virtual drive) but doesn't not appear as an entry on playonlinux. Phil
