Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
I'm running a plain Debian 8 installation, with MATE as the only desktop
installed, plus lightdm. System language is en_US.utf8, but I want to run a
user session as de_DE.utf8.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
I generated the respective locales with dpkg-reconfigure locales. In lightdm I
then select the locale de_DE.utf8 and login.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
MATE still runs in en_US.utf8. Running 'locale' from a terminal shows
everything is en_US.UTF-8
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected MATE to accept lightdm's language settings.

mate-session-manager is latest from jessie/stable, but installing the -2
version from experimental shows the same behavior.

Hello Ulrich!

Did you verify this with other desktops or window managers to be a bug
in mate-session-manager rather than in lightdm? Or did you alternatively
test a different display manager like kdm or gdm3?

lightdm is well known to be pretty broken when it comes to session and
language selection. I have filed multiple bugs on these issues to the
upstream bug tracker which still haven't been addressed and I have
consequently given up on lightdm.

Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I wasn't sure what caused the problem, so I assumed the session was at
fault. But indeed: I installed fvwm1 just to check, and it also doesn't
use the correct locale, so it must be lightdm or something in between.

Thanks for the pointers, I think this bug can be closed then.

Best regards,
Ulrich

Control: reassign -1
Control: retitle -1 language settings not properly applied in X session

Or reassigned against lightdm... Doing that with this mail.

Control: reassign -1 lightdm

Fixing BTS control command... Now reassigning to lightdm.

Which greeter are you using? Probably this is a duplicate of #765077. See workaround there.
