If I first manually install the packages (libgif4, libmysqlclient18, etc ) from DVD nr 1, I still get errors like "package x is already installed and configured" for many packages.

I managed to install postgis by manually installing all the packages required from DVD1, after that packages from DVD2 and in the end postgis from DVD3.
This should be working:apt-get install postgresql libgif4 libmysqlclient18 libodbc1 libpoppler46 libxerces-c3.1 odbcinst1debian2 libblas3 liblapack3 libgfortran3 libxslt1.1:amd64 postgresql-contrib-9.4 #requires DVD 1
apt-get install libhdf5-8:amd64 libarmadillo4 libnetcdfc7 libgdal1h gdal-bin libxslt1.1:amd64 #requires DVD 2
apt-get install postgis #requires DVD 3

I still think there is a small issue in the order aptitude and apt selects packets to install.

Hello Adrian,

I could reproduce this, but don't think it's really related to the
postgis package. Also note that simply running `apt-get -f install` and
`apt-get install postgis` a second (or third, I don't remember) time
solved the issue. I saw no need to manually specify the dependencies to
install.

Maybe the apt maintainers can comment better on the abilities of
apt-cdrom and dependency resolution across removable media.
