Dear Maintainer,

When I log in to GNOME 3 I always get the "Oh no! Something has gone
wrong," screen, but it disappears after a couple of seconds and my
desktop appears as normal.

I don't know how you're supposed to diagnose what has gone wrong when
you see this screen, but I'm attaching what appears in the systemd
journal at the time in case it's of any use.

Since a few days, I notice the same problem with all existing user
accounts on my system.

I also see this bug on stretch. It affects my main system, a new
installation on bare metal, and a new installation in a VM, so it's
nothing in my profile, settings, or hardware that is causing it.

I see it every time a user logs in from GDM3 to Gnome3. With a small
probability (maybe 1 in 10) I get booted back to GDM3, but most of the
time my Gnome3 desktop just appears after a couple of seconds.

I do not see the issue if I boot into Gnome on Wayland. I see it only if
I choose one of the X11-based desktops, such as the system default.
Wayland is currently not stable enough to use, so that's not a work-around.

I am beginning to suspect that this is a bug in gdm3, not a bug in the
user session.

The above user journal shows no errors. However, when I inspect the
journal for gdm3...

Here we see a number of errors that might be the cause of a crash in
gdm3. My guess is that most of the time, my gnome-session takes over
quickly enough that the crashed gdm3 is ignored, but sometimes, startup
of my gnome-session takes just a little too long, and some system
monitor restarts gdm3 before my gnome-session can take over.

I am posting another set of journal entries. In this session, I logged
in via GDM3, got the "Oh no!" message, and was booted back to GDM3. I
logged in again, and was this time granted my desktop.

In the above, you can see that at 12:03:41 I initiated login. You see
the GIOStream errors, and then at 12:41:42 you see the
'org.a11y.atspi.Registry' service reactivation, and I was kicked back to
the login prompt. Notice that in the set of journals I uploaded
yesterday, this service did not reactivate, and my first login attempt
succeeded. At 12:41:48 I tried to login again, and was successful this time.

As seen in the above journal, at 12:03:41 org.a11y.atspi.Registry failed
b/c some resource was not available on display :0, and this corresponds
to me getting booted back to the login prompt. The second try at
12:03:48 was successful.
