bug 468925 still exists in version 0.5.2+dfsg-5.
When starting brutalchess from command line, I receive the following output:

:~$ brutalchess
Failed to load fonts.
Failed to load pawn.

... and there's no font in the menu.

Patch 05_use_our_fonts.diff must be updated because the DejaVu fonts are
now located in the new fonts-dejavu package. The path still points to
the old location which makes the menu invisible. I am going to fix this
soon.

Hi Chris,

thanks for the report. This is a path issue with the Dejavu fonts. It is
different from #468925 but the result is the same. I forgot to update a
patch when I switched from ttf-dejavu to the new fonts-dejavu package.
You can easily fix this for yourself by installing ttf-dejavu in stable.

I am going to upload a new revision which will fix this path issue in
unstable and testing. However while I was working on the fix, I
discovered that some letters / glyphs are now missing in the menu. It is
usable again but this is not the way it should be hence I'll keep this
bug report open and retitle it accordingly. I suspect that a change in
libfreetype6 is responsible for the corrupted fonts but I don't know how
to fix this in brutalchess for the moment.

I would also upload an updated package to stable but a rebuild would
introduce the same issue as described above. Hence I recommend to
everyone who is affected by this to install the ttf-dejavu package in
Jessie. Sorry for the inconvenience.
