* Package name : julia-gadfly Upstream Author : Daniel C. Jones * URL : http://gadflyjl.org/ * License : Expat Programming Lang: Julia Description : crafty statistical graphics for Julia Gadfly is a plotting and data visualization system written in Julia. . It's influenced heavily by Leland Wilkinson's book The Grammar of Graphics and Hadley Wickham's refinement of that grammar in ggplot2. . Julia is a high-level, high-performance dynamic programming language for technical computing, with syntax that is familiar to users of other technical computing environments. Package is needed by beaker-notebook (bug#795980) and the ShowMeBox project: https://wiki.debian.org/ShowMeBox - if interested, see also https://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/showme-devel/2015-October/000050.html Cc'ing Debian Julia Team in the hope they will pick this up. - Jonas
Hi Jonas, I am in the process of packaging Julia 0.4.0. To run on the hardware considered for the ShowMeBox project, the julia package will first have to be ported to the armhf architecture. Would you be interested in helping with the porting? Regarding julia-gadfly, so far no Julia packages have been packaged for Debian, relying on users to install packages using Pkg.add(). @Sébastien: What are your thoughts on packaging Julia packages? Regards, Peter
Hi Peter, Quoting Peter Colberg (2015-10-19 01:22:17) I'd be happy to help as much as I can. That said I do suspect Graham Inggs (now cc'ed) to be far better skilled than me. You might have noticed him already, as he has worked for some time on getting Julia to work on armhf. packaging system but a visualization system?!? - Jonas
Julia add-ons.
Gadfly has several dependencies [2]:
julia 0.3
Codecs
Colors 0.3.4
Compat
Compose 0.3.11
Contour
DataFrames 0.4.2
DataStructures
Dates
Distributions
Hexagons
Iterators 0.1.5
JSON
KernelDensity
Loess
Showoff 0.0.3
StatsBase
Installing Gadfly using Julia's package manager pulls in even more
packages (dependencies of dependencies, I guess), see the output
below.
I assume all of these would need to be packaged for Debian as well.
Sébastien, Peter, is this correct?

Quoting Graham Inggs (2015-10-21 16:25:41) [...] Yes, Debian packages need to work, so all dependencies that correlates to Debian "Build-Depends:", "Depends:" or "Recommends:" need to be packaged as well. Build routines must avoid any reliance on network access. Weaker dependencies correlating to Debian "Suggests:" preferrably should be packaged too, but may be skipped. - Jonas
