I noticed that the user interface controls were different on this version of
icedove, and I couldn't find a way to easily scroll the list of messages pane
back a few messages or a page at a time, ie there were no places to click on
above and below the scroll bar and the mouse wheel didn't work.

This is particularly a problem in folders with thousands of messages where the
scroll slider will at a minimum scroll several pages of listings of messages.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

Downgrading to version in unstable worked.

Hello Arthur,

you don't let us know which desktop environment you use. But I assume
you are running Gnome 3.
The click able buttons on the scrollbar are gone for several times. The
PgUp/PgDn functionality is available by clicking the right mouse button
if you have placed the mouse pointer above or below the scroll slider.
