It would be really nice if openssh would adopt the existing config and
host key from /etc/ssh-nonfree.

You know that the config files are a bit different and I'm not sure if
the key format will be identical too. So if someone can figure all this
out and provide the necessary information and scriptst to convert
ssh-nonfree config files into ssh config files, we could think about
this.
