Dear Maintainer, This problem exists in this latest version of Firefox that Debian is using. When using Google hangouts via the Gmail web gui, emojis are not being displayed. Appears lots of people are having the same issue on other platforms. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/hangouts/nUXEfD--EOE;context-place=topicsearchin/hangouts/category$3Agmail|sort:relevance|spell:false Mozilla is trying to fix the problem.
Firefox didn't contain an emoji font before version 50. Please try firefox-esr from experimental (version 52.0esr-1) or firefox 52 from unstable. Mike
Firefox 52 does fix the issue. Was Google providing some sticker to make that work? Because emojis were displayed, in some fashion, in recent versions of Firefox.
Some sticker or some web font, presumably. Google likes to remove support for browsers older than a few months, so if all of the recent versions of the most used browsers can now render emoji without anything provided by the server, they might have removed whatever they had that made it work. Mike
I think we can close this bug: Google Hangout has been killed by Google since 6~ years. https://gcemetery.co/google-hangouts/
