npm2deb parses packages.json of nodejs modules to generate copyright
file currently. But it misses any copyright notices outside
package.json. It would be good to use licensecheck to update copyright
file generated by npm2deb. If licensecheck can parse package.json if
present to generate header and files section then we can just use
licensecheck alone to generate copyright file.

Thanks for the suggestion.

More generically, I believe (also from our brief conversation about this
on irc) that your suggestion is for licensecheck to not only gather
file-specific metadata from sourcecode (copyright holders, years,
licenses) as done currently, but additionally to gather project-wide
metadata (name, description, Homepage) from files like package.json (for
npm-distributed projects).

Do I understand that correctly?

Interesting idea!

yes. It may also be possible if header was reused from existing
copyright file since npm2deb already knows how to create this
information. But you can choose what is the best option here.
